It’s that time of year again where all the talk in the music world is focussed on one thing… who is going to get the christmas number one this year? After a Facebook campaign saw Rage Against The Machine grab the top spot last year ahead of X Factor winner Joe McElderry, this years race anything can happen, and I’ve selected a few of my suggestions of who will grab the biggest number one spot of the year this time round.<\/p>\n

X Factor Winner<\/h2>\n

\"\" As always the favourite is the X Factor winner but as I said earlier, after last years triumph for Rage Against The Machine this years winner will definitely not be as confident going into the race.<\/p>\n

The unbelievable popularity of the show and how much public interest it has had over the last few months gives the winner such a strong backing straight from when the single is released and with each contestant still in the show having a different song to release if they win, the songs chosen should fit the performers style perfectly and in that case make it a better single and more of a chance to grab that number one spot.<\/p>\n

Odds – 4\/7<\/p>\n

The Trashmen – Surfin’ Bird<\/h2>\n

Another year and another campaign to knock X Factor off the top spot and this years song of choice could be even more\u00a0ridiculous\u00a0than last year. The Trashmen’s 1963 hit Surfin’ Bird, which has jumped back into the public eye by being used in the TV show Family Guy is now getting more backers by the day to put this to number one.<\/p>\n

Will the campaigners succeed again at ruining Simon Cowell’s plans?<\/p>\n

Jon Cage – 4’33”<\/h2>\n

\"\"Now if you thought that Surfin’ Bird was weird then this next song by Jon Cage will make you think that the Christmas number one is turning into a bit of a joke. 4 minutes 33 seconds is an orchestral piece by Jon Cage that is\u00a0literally\u00a0silence for 4 minutes and 33 seconds.<\/p>\n

It is bizzarre to say the least, hearing it on the radio you would think it’s not working and it may be a good experience for some but sitting and listening to silence for 4 and a half minutes is not worthy of a christmas number one for me.<\/p>\n

Odds – 5\/1<\/p>\n

Xander Rawlins – 1000 Miles Apart<\/h2>\n

Now this is more like it. A new proper christmas song going for the number one for a change. Xander Rawlings’ is a serving Grenadier Guard and the song he is releasing is about his time in Afghanistan and as well as the christmas number one he is also raising money for ABF The Soldiers Charity and Combat Stress.<\/p>\n

The single 1000 Miles Apart will be released on the 13th December and is very much going for that number one spot, as well as hopefully raising a lot of money. I’m just glad a new Christmas song is going for the number one spot.<\/p>\n

Gamu Nhengu – Where Will You Sleep This Christmas<\/h2>\n

\"\"She didn’t make it through to the live shows but Gamu Nhengu isn’t giving up her fight just yet. After gaining a strong fan base after her\u00a0controversial exit from this years X Factor she will be releasing a Christmas single\u00a0and will go head to head with the X Factor winner in order to get it.<\/p>\n

The single is called Where Will You Sleep This Christmas and is being released for the\u00a0children’s\u00a0charity Aberlour and feature the Aberlour choir. What better way for Gamu to get back at the show then to beat them to the number one spot.<\/p>\n

Odds – 7\/1<\/p>\n

Coldplay – Christmas Lights<\/h2>\n

One of the big artists going in for the number one spot this year is Coldplay who have released their own festive song to go into the race.<\/p>\n

It’s not one of the main contenders if your looking at the odds but theres still 2 weeks till the number one spot is revealed so anything can happen until then.<\/p>\n
