The King's Speech Review

It has claimed award after award since it’s release and now after landing the Best Picture award at the Oscars last night, it is going to be a hard film to review without being biased to all the love and awards the film has received.

However if I was to some up the film in a few sentences I would say it was made brilliantly, with amazing performances by all the cast. It told the story fantastically and although it’s not normally a film that I would like, I did find it enjoyable to watch and can see why it has received so many awards.

For those few of you who do not know, The King’s Speech, directed by Oscar winner Tom Hooper and written by Oscar winner David Seidler, tells the story of King George VI, played by Oscar winner Colin Firth, and his stammer, which famously troubled his public speaking in his transition between the Duke of York and becoming King after the death of his father, King George V and the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII.

King George VI, formally Prince Albert, seeks help to conquer his stammering problem and after trying many different methods and treatments gives up, until his wife Elizabeth, the Queens mother played by Helena Bonham Carter, convinces him to try one more speech therapist, Australian, Lionel Logue, played by Geoffrey Rush.

The relationship between “Bertie”(King George VI) and Lionel Logue is fascinating to watch and this is very much down to superb acting from both Firth and Rush.

I did not know the story of King George VI before watching the film like most viewers probably are, so I was kind of learning it as I was watching and although at times I’ll admit I got a bit bored with all the historic story telling(not really a favourite topic of mine), I was kept interested to see the relationship between Bertie and Logue develop and how the new King would get on in his speech at the end of the film.

I wouldn’t call it the best film I’ve seen in the last year like the Oscars would suggest, but it is definitely a good film, very well made, with very good acting and definitely worth seeing if you can. Also good to see a British film grabbing all the headlines and getting a lot of awards and lets hope for more British films grabbing the headlines in the year to come :).
